Most people know the name Walt Disney. Not too many are familiar with his nephew Roy however. Roy has passed away of Cancer today reports the LA Times. Roy was Walt’s nephew and as LA Times reporters James Bates and Dawn C. Chmielewski say he was a man committed to the creative heart of the company.

“By 1984, Disney had grown increasingly frustrated with the Walt Disney Co., which he likened to a real estate company that happened to be in the movie business. The company had let its feature animation film business, once the cornerstone of the company, deteriorate. The company, Disney would later say, had lost its creative drive.”

While Roy served as the head of the animation department Disney released timeless animated classics such as “The Little Mermaid” “Beauty and The Beast” and “The Lion King”. Roy Disney passes away just shortly after Disney made its first hand drawn animation a la Beauty and The Beast and Lion King and Little Mermaid. The film “The Princess and the Frog” has been warmly recieved proving that while 3D animation draws crowds there is still a place in the hearts of audiences for hand drawn 2-D animation that is so deep in Disney’s history.
